this time i got to illustrate an article about the current wave of protests happening in brazil. yesterday i gave my own voice to the cause and it felt amazing to be a part of something so important to my country.

EVERYONE, BRAZIL NEEDS YOUR HELP.

According to the Constituion of 1988, Brazil is a secular state, i.e., a goverment supposed to be neutral in religious matters.

However, everyday we observe the contrary happening, through official proposes of religious conotation and an Evangelical Parliamentary Front, both crippling the development of our contry. In March 2013, Evangelical pastor and legislator Marco Feliciano was elected president of the Human Rights and Minorities Commission, despite videos showing his dubious (racist, sexist, homophobic, ableist and criminal) activities and problematic statements. Manifestations against his position were made in the entire country, but he’s still the president of the CHDM.

We’re facing law proposals based on personal faith, without any kind of social, cultural or economic study or validation, using questionable interpretations of the Bible.

That’s why we need everyone’s help: we want the revocation of religious parties insisting to use their faith to damage our society, trying to naturalize hatred, discrimination and violence against minorities. Allowing them to have power means accepting not all of us are humans, and dividing people between those who deserve or not rights. We can’t give up on trying to find solutions for social problems or treat the so called “will of god” to protect only a small share of the population, because the minorities do not deserve improvements in their lives, and “that’s a fact” (sic) *. Even if pastor Feliciano were to change part of his speeches, it won’t change the fact he’s analyzing social context based on a religious book, not on social, historical, economic and cultural studies.

Everyone has the right to choose and live their faith, but a religion cannot, in any aspect, take away other’s rights, and religious figures cannot have their crimes softened, because, more than anything, they are citizens, and deserve to be judged as such.

A seasonsal state is not an atheist state. This petition is not enough on its own. We need other strategies and protests, walks and suggestions. If we really want to change anything, we have to educate ourselves, and think and propose improvements considering what we already have.

“Eu, (nome, data de nascimento, idade e cpf), estou denunciando a Frente Parlamentar Evangélica e o pastor Marco Feliciano, atual presidente da comissão de Direitos Humanos, por seu exercício irregular de política ligada à religião, que se constitui como ILEGAL na constituição brasileira de 1988. Denuncio por crime contra a segurança nacional e a ordem política e social, e exijo retratação e punição.

Art. 19. É vedado à União, aos Estados, ao Distrito Federal e aos Municípios: I - estabelecer cultos religiosos ou igrejas, subvencioná-los, embaraçar-lhes o funcionamento ou manter com eles ou seus representantes relações de dependência ou aliança, ressalvada, na forma da lei, a colaboração de interesse público;” Vamos entupir a caixa de e-mail da polícia federal até se manifestarem em prol do nosso estado.

CONSTITUIÇÃO Artigo 5° (Caput). IV- é livre a manifestação do pensamento, sendo vedado o anonimato; VIII- ninguém será privado de direitos por motivo de crença religiosa ou de convicção filosófica ou política, salvo se as invocar para eximir-se de obrigação legal a todos imposta e recusar-se a cumprir prestação alternativa, fixada em lei.

Art. 19. Artigo 72 (Caput) §7°- Nenhum culto ou igreja gozará de subvenção oficial, nem terá relações de dependência ou aliança com o Governo da União ou dos Estados.
